About (English)
Cruvière is a free, illustrated map of French wine and spirits appellations, built from the open plot-level data of INAO, the French appellation authority. It covers 20 regions, 367 appellations, 844 climats, crus and named sites (Burgundy’s grands and premiers crus, Alsace’s grands crus, Champagne’s crus) and 158 estates.
The menus, buttons, legend and card headings can be shown in English: use the “English” button under the search box, or open any page with ?lang=en. The descriptions themselves stay in French. To use the map, zoom in or type a name in the search box (“gevrey”, “chateau margaux” and “cote rotie” all work; accents are optional), then click an area to open its card. Every appellation, climat and estate also has its own page.
What the outlines show
Areas are drawn from INAO’s open data (plot-level delimitation and geographical areas), then simplified for display. INAO itself describes this data as indicative: only the official delimitation plans are authoritative. Areas in hectares are delimited areas, not planted areas.
The stars
Stars are this map’s own editorial assessment of renown and prestige: an opinion, not a fact. They are not an official classification, a tasting score or a measure of price. Official classifications (1855, Graves, Saint-Émilion, crus bourgeois) are shown separately, with their date. Appellations: 1 little known, 2 known to enthusiasts, 3 renowned, 4 highly renowned, 5 legendary. Estates and houses: 1 little known, 2 quietly respected, 3 recognised, 4 very prestigious, 5 iconic; how well the general public knows the name is shown separately.
Prices and wine
Price ranges are rough estimates for buying from a wine shop in France, not recorded prices. The site sells no wine and links to no shop; its only product is an A2 print of the map.
Who makes it
Built by one person, with help from an AI assistant (Claude) for code and research. Published facts are checked against named sources, and anything that could not be sourced was removed. Corrections are welcome: every card has a “Report an error” link, or write to contact@cruviere.fr.
